Jess Estrada is one of my favorite bloggers to follow – she keeps it real with witty, thoughtful content and I love her sense of style. Naturally, she came to mind to kick of The Reveal’s Style Crush series.
Who is your style crush and why?
My style crushes are women who understand their style and what works on their body, regardless of what’s trendy. They exude confidence and truly shine, no matter what they’re wearing!
I recently got back from London, which reminded me that Victoria Beckham is my perennial style muse. I get a lot of inspiration from fashion bloggers and industry people. Karla Deras and Sincerely Jules are my all-time favorites, and I also adore petite style icons Wendy Nguyen and Miroslava Duma.
Have you been stylish all your life? If not, how did you discover your personal style?
Ha! I wish. I’d spent way too much time looking at outside sources like magazines and mannequins to help me describe my personal style. I think at one point I just decided it was easier to take care of my skin and body, and tune into how I felt when I wore things.
What is your most memorable fashion faux pas?
I dyed the bottom half of my long hair hot pink in ~2004, way before the much cooler ombre trends we have today. I was lazy and didn’t keep up maintenance, so there was a lot of orange fade. Not my proudest moment!
What style advice would you give to your younger self?
True style lies in how you carry yourself, and how you take care of your body. Not in trend reports or what people tell you!
What’s the one thing you wear over and over and can’t live without?
I got this military jacket with really great patches for a steal at Brooklyn Flea many years ago. It’s just oversize enough to wear with layers or by itself without drowning my frame in fabric. I love it and wear it all the time.
Is there anything we should all go out and buy right now?
Invest in a leather jacket that fits your style and will last for a long time.
I love how you can pull off so many different styles – urban, modern, feminine, sporty. Is there a secret to this?
I’ve never felt like I couldn’t wear something because it wasn’t my style. If it makes me feel like a badass, I’m wearing it. It’s just clothes. Go with your mood and have fun with it!
