Spring break is approaching and we’ve gone from packing a skimpy bikini and magazines (here we come Cancun!) to a full suitcase and carry on with snacks, games (for those of us with kids) and books.
One of our favorite activities, often lost in our increasingly busy lives, reading a good book has a magical way of transporting and transforming us. As you’re headed somewhere warm and sunny, grab one of our picks and get ready to get lost.
Light-hearted and admittedly relatable, Crazy Rich Asians is about 20-somethings traveling from New York to Singapore to meet her boyfriend’s family. Wildly entertaining secrets unravel (we won’t give them away) in this purely fun book, plus reading about vacation on vacation is the perfect escape.
Here I Am is Jonathan Safran Foer’s first novel in more than a decade. The acclaimed author of “Everything is Illuminated”, knocks it out of the park with this page turner. He turns the doldrums of everyday life into poetry and drama while beautifully capturing how they intersect with current events, history, secret desires, family duties and more. Of note, download this book. It’s way too heavy to carry!
An oldie, but goodie, The Glass Castle by Jeannette Wells will forever be one of the best books we’ve read. Another memoir, Wells takes us on her life journey in a story with twists and turns that will challenge your thinking about family, love and homelessness.
Another book that has been around for a few years, We are Completely Beside Ourselves by Karen Joy Fowler has become a favorite. Well-written with an insanely interesting story line, Fowler explores the life of a girl who was raised by her parents with a twin sister, only the sister is an ape. Get a look inside her unusual life and the role her brother plays in unveiling the cruel treatment of animals in our society.
Jenny Lawson, aka The Bloggess, is hilarious. Her book “Let’s Pretend this Never Happened” is a mostly true memoir that will have you laughing out loud. Make a note, if you read this in public, be prepared to laugh so hard, the people around you will think you’ve lost your mind. We’re taking her newest book You are Here with us this year!
What are you reading? What are some of your all-time favorites?
